Play Time

Every starry-eyed playwright needs to start somewhere, and the Modern Muse Theatre Company's "The Play's the Thing" New Play Festival aims to be a stepping stone toward larger success. "When we started the company, we really believed in developing new work," says spokesman Stephen Lavezza. "If the smaller theaters aren't developing new work, then who's going to? Our main commitment is to not let this part of our mission die — especially in a bad economy."

Starting today and continuing through Saturday, the festival includes three staged readings of local work; a workshop titled “Beginnings: Getting Into the Play”; a New Play Festival Rap/Wrap Party, where attendees can mingle with actors and playwrights; and a late-night adventurous look at social media, with five raw, ten-minute plays inspired by Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. "It's kind of down and dirty, very much like the social media that drives the plays," notes Lavezza. The staged readings include The Charisma Contest, by Coleen Hubbard; Lost Creatures, by Melissa Lucero McCarl; and Breslin Rayhope, by Judy GeBauer.

The Play's the Thing takes place at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street. Tickets for the workshop are $30; the staged readings are free. For more information, call 303-780-7836 or go to www.modernmusetheatre.com.
