Get a Handle on Bikes in Boulder

Denver became the envy of the country — nay, the world! — when it unveiled B-Cycle in April. The city also supports a host of bicycle-friendly groups and events, including the Denver Cruisers, Critical Mass (on occasion) and Bike to Work Day, on June 23. But when it comes to truly creating a culture of cycling (and walking), Boulder takes the cake with Walk & Bike Month, more than eighty events and activities spread throughout June and aimed at “getting more people to say, ‘You know what? I’ll take my bike today instead,’” says Sue Prant, director of the celebration.

Today, those simply in the mood for a casual cruise can get in on the action. From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Boulder High School, 1604 Arapahoe Avenue, dozens of vendors — from “the guys who have their own bike shops” to “those who just deal out of their garages or meet up at these swaps” — will gather for a Vintage Bike Swap and offer everything from collectors’ items to simple, get-around-town cruisers. One of those vendors, Community Cycles, will have 150 bikes ranging in price from $60 to $200.

“We offer a million different programs,” says Prant. “Programs for kids, for people just being let out of prison, or just to teach bike mechanics. Those programs don’t tend to be self-supporting, so we supplement them with bike sales.”
