Feeling It in Aspen

Restless Empathy is an ambitious group exhibit that fills the Aspen Art Museum and extends to a few other places around town. It was put together by Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson and Matthew Thompson, who invited eight participants to create work exploring the idea of empathy. Specially created pieces by Allora & Calzadilla, Pawel Althamer, Marc Bijl, Lara Favaretto, Geof Oppenheimer, Frances Stark, Mark Wallinger and Lars Ø. Ramberg are included. A group of memorial benches by Ramberg have been getting a particular amount of buzz, says AAM spokesman Jeff Murcko, since they are dedicated to gonzo journalist and longtime Aspenite Hunter S. Thompson.

“The benches have definitely caused people to talk. They have Thompson quotes on them, and the quotes cause you to think of what Thompson means to you and what Thompson meant to Aspen. People have been calling and asking if they’re going to stay in Aspen, and many have been disappointed when they learn that they won’t,” he says.

This evening, there will be a walkthrough with the curators, some of the artists, and Christian Rattemeyer, from the Museum of Modern Art, who contributed to the catalogue. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. at the museum, 590 North Mill Street in Aspen. Call 1-970-925-8050 or go to www.aspenartmuseum.org.
