Get a Grip

Lights. Camera. Action figures! It's time again for Gio Toninelo's G.I. Joe Fest, a celebration of film dedicated to the stop-motion animated exploits of everyone's favorite Real American Hero toys. Now in its third year, the event continues to find new tales to tell via the medium of Joe. This year's all-new slate of films includes everything from a remake of The Shining starring Destro to a comedic love story starring Cobra Commander and Scarlet.

Highlights of the ninety-minute program include two films from female filmmakers, a selection of shorts from the G.I. Joe animation workshop earlier this month, and the dark short "Rick's Battle Shock," a "Vietnam deliverance" tale from the U.K. The centerpiece is "Race of Evil," a short feature from Taiwan set in World War II. "It's very eerie. Very well done, animation wise," Toninelo says. "There's this ghost that keeps taking the soldiers, the Germans and the Americans. It's pretty interesting."

The Joe-fest starts tonight at 8 p.m. at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street. Tickets are $12, or $8 if you come dressed as a G.I. Joe character. All attendees have a chance to win a boxed set of G.I. Joe collectibles. For more information, visit www.gijoefilmfestival.com or call 303-477-5977.
