Cinemaphiles, meet Denver's newest film event: The Film Festival of Colorado. The eclectic festival will showcase a wide variety of films, half of which originated in Colorado. "We invited films with the theme of adapting and surviving in our changing world," explains Helen Trencher, the festival's associate director. "A good handful of films really met that theme in a positive, or at least thought-provoking, way."

The festival is the creation of Trencher and Bob Webb, who hope it will offer opportunities for Colorado filmmakers to meet and collaborate. "We want to strengthen the local film community here in Denver," Trencher says. "We feel a film festival can go a long way to strengthen it in terms of creating synergies and networking."

Screenings start tonight and continue through Sunday, June 27, at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue, and other venues in the northwest neighborhood. Kicking off the festival is The Assistants, starring Stacy Keach, Jane Seymour and Joe Mantegna. Tickets for single showings are $10; festival day passes and all-access passes are available as well.
