Tough Art

Those Iron Chef competitors have no problem looking tough as they prepare for a match: Nothing says “Don’t touch me” better than a row of perfectly sharpened Wüsthofs glistening on a counter. But what about an Iron Artist? Can he wield a nasty Kolinski sable brush in your face and expect you to cower?

Find out for yourself how artists handle the challenge at today’s Iron Artist Competition, a new fundraising lark hosted by The Other Side Arts to benefit TOSA’s arts programming and services for emerging artists. The drill? In the Iron Chef spirit, nine local artists will compete to create a masterpiece using a secret art material revealed only at the beginning of the contest. They’ll then have access to TOSA’s studio space and metal shop for two hours to make something from…something. Meanwhile, spectators can check out TOSA’s Denver facility, nosh on hot dogs and beer, bid on silent auction items and vote for their favorite finished works. The artworks created today will also be auctioned off after the competition.

Join in the fun at TOSA, 1644 Platte Street, from noon to 6 p.m. (the competition is from 2 to 4); admission is $10. Get details at www.theothersidearts.org or call 303-561-3000.
Sat., June 26, 12-6 p.m., 2010
