Dance and Drive

Never settle for one taste when you can have two -- especially if those two tastes are completely unrelated, but both a treat. At the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver’s Mixed Taste lecture series, that’s exactly what you get: two lectures on two topics with nothing in common, followed by a simultaneous Q&A session. But tonight’s entry, with lectures on “African Dance” and “A Motorama,” is particularly tasty: “Once a year, we have an extravaganza where we set up a stage in the parking lot,” says MCA’s Ali Hodkowski, who explains that Mixed Taste lectures are usually held in a smaller space, but this entry was expanded in order to accommodate props, such as actual African dancers. As for the second taste, she adds, “I have to confirm this, but I believe we will have at least one car.”

In terms of actual content, MCA “Chief of Fictions” Sarah Baie says the African Dance lecture will focus on different styles of West African drumming and dance, while the Motorama lecture will concentrate on Harley Earl, “a pioneer of classic car design who paved the way for the tail fin.” And anyone who’s not satisfied with a mix like that has no taste at all.

The event goes from 5 to 10 p.m. and costs $17 ($12 for MCA members). For more information, go to www.mcadenver.org or call 303-298-7554.
