Four for the Fourth

There are so many Independence Day runs in Colorado that the Fourth of July is starting to feel like a celebration of running for our lives, not fighting for our freedom. Still, you can’t go wrong with the Liberty Run 4 Mile, which starts a few hours after dawn's early light in Washington Park, named for our first commander-in-chief.

The four-mile run/walk, which blasts off at 8 a.m. from the south end of the park, will be followed by the Firecracker Kids Fun Run, and then ends -- like any proper Fourth of July party -- with food and drink. There will be awards for the top runners in every category, including the timely Best Display of USA (World Cup notwithstanding, this is our national day of reminder that you don't have to be a soccer hooligan to rock your country’s colors).

Registration is 100 George Washingtons for a Fourth for the Fourth four-pack (four runners), $25 for seniors and youth under seventeen, or $33 per adult, and includes a HydraPouch: The Liberty Run went green last year as the first cupless road run in the U.S. Pre-register online at RunningGuru.com or at any of the Runner’s Roost shops. The Firecracker Run is free; just light the fuse and let the kids burn themselves out.
