Patriot Games

As home to Denver’s oldest structure, the Four Mile House, Four Mile Historic Park knows how to kick it old-school style. Really old school. Throughout the year, the Four Mile House Museum hosts pioneer story-time sessions, living history days, Victorian tea parties and ribbon embroidery classes, among many other events. For Independence Day, then, it only makes sense that Four Mile Historic Park would throw an Old-Fashioned July 4th Celebration, with visits from Thomas Jefferson, Abe Lincoln and Uncle Sam; a reading of the Declaration of Independence; Civil War reenactments by the 1st Colorado Volunteer Infantry; and age-appropriate games and crafts, as well as ice cream and horse-drawn wagon rides, that appeal to both kids and adults.

“You’ll know you’re in the right place when you hear the sounds of the Civil War cannon and the patriotic tunes of the Denver Concert Band,” says the Four Mile’s MacKenzie Pacifico. “Remind yourself and your loved ones of the freedoms we have today, like BBQs, beer and firecrackers, because of the sacrifices that our nation’s patriots have made over the past 234 years.”

The celebration runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; admission ranges from free (for members, military and kids under six) to $7. Four Mile Historic Park is located at 715 South Forest Street; for more information, call 720-865-0800 or go to www.fourmilehistoricpark.org.
