Walk Like an Egyptian

“This is an exhibition of really 3,000 years of Egyptian history,” explains Kristy Bassuener, spokeswoman for the Denver Art Museum. “We were really excited and certainly, this was the exact type of exhibition that the Hamilton building was meant for. We have the climate control, the space and the ability to do justice to an exhibit of this scope.”

She’s talking about Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs, a touring exhibition featuring artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun. “When people come in, they’ll see a very short orientation video, narrated by Harrison Ford, and then go through galleries that talk about what pharaohs were, what are the signs of the pharaohs, what was their religion, what was palace life like,” Bassuener continues. “And then you’ll get to the section where they talk about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922, and you’ll descend into our first-floor gallery, which has about fifty objects from the tomb. It’s basically a re-created tomb of King Tut.”

The exhibition, which opened on June 29, will be on display through January 9, 2011, and although that seems like plenty of time, Bassuener warns that you’ll need to buy tickets in advance. “I am expecting some sell-outs, especially on weekends,” she says. Admission is $20 on weekdays and $22 on weekends for members, $25 on weekdays and $30 on weekends for non-members; for more information, go to www.denverartmuseum.org or call 720-865-5000.
