Working Class American 07/22/2010 7:20:00 PM
Poor women.
Working class Americans go without because we cannot afford medicine because of all the illegals like her. How did she pay for this. Tax payers dollars that is how.
I am not for government intervention on Health Care either.

US.SOLDIER 07/07/2010 10:18:00 PM
WOW!! What a bunch or racist, arrogant, cynical and hateful people. You can look at this story two ways: 1. She is a strong individual who has overcome a lot of obstacles and is currently facing her biggest one (death) or 2. She is an illegal immigrant who came to steal my job and health care "hope she dies" bla bla bla. I hope you never find your self walking a mile in her shoes. Because of your karma and ignorance it is likely you would die a cold and agonizing death. Let’s get some facts straight: 1. Guatemala is NOT Mexico, you bigots!! Common trait of RACIST individuals is redlining and categorizing all minorities, Latinos in this case, in to one group. 2. The act of crossing the border illegally makes the act a crime however it does NOT make the individual a criminal!
3. Did you forget how OUR country was established: IMMIGRANTS!! Your father’s mother, your mother’s mother, your grandparents and so on migrated to this country ILLEGALLY! And history shows they had their share of tribulations (MAYFLOWER) 98.99% of Caucasian American history is traced back to the MAYFLOWER (IMMIGRANTS)!! So cut the crap “they should go back to where they came from” LEARN YOUR HISTORY!!

Heartbreaking for sure, but not unlike thousands of other stories about real US citizens in the same/ simular place regarding health care.
I don't understand thou how she is getting Medicaid, I thought those services were for citizens and not illegals.
-
Lanche 07/07/2010 4:46:00 AM
While this story is very sad. The truth is we all die at some point and time. We all do. The problem with the left is they let their emotions over come right and wrong. The wrong being she should not have been here in the first place. She was not an immigrant she is an illegal. Her country needs to take responsibility for their failures. This is not her Country and the billions that are being spent annually for illegals has to stop no amnesty whatsoever. People better start realizing right from wrong in this Country or its going to get ugly financially, politically and the future of our children is going down the drain due to a backwards thinking agenda.

Isn't it about time to take this down...it's been up for 4-5 days now...and to be brutally honest..."I'm sick of looking at this liberal right wing feel sorry for immigrants crap" !

An enlarged heart is a symptom of a deficiency of vitamin B-12. That would be an inexpensive solution if she has a vitamin deficiency, possibly aggravated by that journey without good nourishment. Have her see a proper doctor in that area.

Send this woman, her kids, her family, & anyone else she knowns the hell back to Guatemala where she belongs. It's her home; she belongs there. Perhaps the kind & compassionate citizens of Guatemala will join together and pay for her medical care, her children's educations, (since they live in America now, they probably speak English-ask the nice folks at the schools there if they can just teach the class in that language since, sfter all, that is what the kids speak...)...and send her a check & food stamps every month so she can sit home on her everexpanding ass & watch "Telemundo" and eat bonbons. What? They won't? Those selfish, heartless bastards! How dare they not happily support anybody too lazy to get a job! Why, they should throw money at her and her entire family! If they don't, they must be racists! It's an outrage-they should be perfectly willing to destroy the economy in their own country in order to take care of her, and every other illerate freeloading drug addicted alcoholic child molester there as well! What's wrong with these people? Can't they see how mean they are being by not delivering wheelbarrows full of cash to her daily?
Julia-tough break. Americans need heart transplants too. Americans who have worked hard to take care of themselves & provide for their families their entire lives, and would never think of begging for a handout from people in another country. Get out of my country, take your band of kids with you, and hope for the best. America will no longer support you, your lack of education, and your multitudes of future criminals, rapists, drug dealers, sex offenders,& thieves. It is not America's fault you made poor choices in your life-that you chose not to get an education, that you chose to bear children that you couldn't afford to properly care for, and that you chose to break the law and illegally enter another country. You made your choices, and we made ours-and ours is to no longer support you freeloading, lazy band of beggars. Get out of my country.

Fazil 07/05/2010 10:32:00 PM
My son is on his third cornea transplant after the first two rejected. Where is the sad story for me and the thousands of dollars I have to pay? Is there someone in Guatemala I can talk to to help pay for this?
-
Kevin 07/05/2010 5:53:00 PM
Am I supposed to feel sorry for this woman? Because I don't.
-
racine 07/05/2010 4:23:00 PM
This is fate as it's most cruel and unfair nature. As it is, there is a long and growing number of Americans on heart transplant lists across the country. Many of whom who cannot afford the $100k-300K+ costs of the workup, bridge to transplant and eventually the transplant and followups to follow. How can we fiscally and legally justify providing these services to illegal aliens while we deny them to deserving Americans??? I've worked in healthcare since 1977, sat on these transplant conferences as we discussed the eligibility of candidates for these elaborate procedures, their compatibilty for success and the future and potential outcomes. Several patients will not fit the criterial while many others will. The other dilemna is the skewed ratio of recipients to donors. How does this poor lady, an illegal on paper many would say, fare? In this economy, when the transplant lists across the country continues to rise and Americans wait their fates, I would say with much regret-very poorly. American's obligation it to care for it's citizens first, that alone is a problem it has been struggling to fulfill for years. Her best bet would be to appeal to a millionaire who might look kindly upon her. Hospitals rely on many of them to provide these minimum services that they almost always loose money on. This is my one sided opinion from my side of the fence...

So, I just wonder: Since we are a country of "Immigrants",excluded the native american indians, does that label us descendants of criminals, example: the first immigrants who came to this country, ransacked, and almost exterminated the native americans?
-
Lyndier 07/04/2010 5:44:00 AM
Maria, there are A LOT of us Latino/as out here who feel as you do and have the same experience. I feel that the reason why many don't express themselves is because they are tired of being called the hateful names that the pro-illegal community lashes out because we don't agree with them. All Latinos are lumped into a group and the media erroneously and shamelessly gives the impression that we all support the illegal community. While I see regretable prejudice exposed here when people keep commenting for Hoolia to go back to MX obviously not reading that the article states she is from Guatemala, that is still not enough for me to be sympathetic for their plight. Unfortunately, thanks the the illegal immigrants, those of us who have been here for generations with Hispanic/Latino surnames and features have to put up with undeserved fallout because people from both camps "assume" we all come from the same place. Do NOT believe that all Latinos are liberals or are pro-illegal.

jonas 07/04/2010 4:37:00 AM
This falls directly into the "too friggin' bad" category. By her own admission she was in very poor health before she ever came to this country. Guess she thought once she got here it was free ride time. I have a solution, though-another great thing about America? Our prisons have hospitals! Best of all, they're free to each & every criminal that walks in the door! And that is exactly what she is-a freeloading disease ridden criminal.
-
joe 07/04/2010 1:20:00 AM
Why does Westword try and make us feel bad for criminals? They should have just let her die. She is stealing from hard working Americans. How many tax paying Americans have a similar medical condition and wont be treated because we have to pay for this thief? Send her back to mexico. That is where she belongs. She is mad about us speaking english? This is an english speaking country you tosser!!!!
-
Joe 07/04/2010 1:16:00 AM
They should let the crook die. What she is doing to this country is wrong! Many AMERICANS are going through the same thing. Why should we feel bad when a thief gets what she deserves? She didn't like the fact they were all speaking english? well no $h!t they are speaking english, this is America and all. If she doesn't like it she can take her a$$ back to mexico where she belongs! We wont miss her!

U.S. Citizen 07/03/2010 4:21:00 PM
No offense, but do not intentionally deceive readers by mixing "immigrants" in with "illegal immigrants" in attempt to increase sympathy for illegals. Not happening.
Also, latinos were here hundreds of years ago but nowhere nearly as many as the American Indians. Lations were NOT indigenous except for the southwest portion of the United States and even then, mexico had been settled by Spain so some of those latinos were of European descent and have no claim to the southwest portion of the U.S. that they are attempting to reclaim through overpopulation. Don't believe it? Just look up the Aztlan movement.
If we want to discuss our immigration laws, I suggest we adopt the SAME LAWS that mexico has. That way no one can claim racial profiling. Of course, mexico's laws are far MORE harsh than ours so they, of all nations, should shut up and stop criticizing our pathetic attempts at enforcing our WEAK laws.
Talk about a bunch of hypocrites!

I call my self a Mexican thou i was born in Texas and am 4th generation Tejano. Texas was Mexico before it became a state.I am also a vietnam veteran an am very proud combat medic. I am a very fourtunate man that just so happened was born in this country that for some strange reason has to hate people for one reason or another. I Pray every day for all humanbeings. regarless of who they are. Please just for 1 day practice no hate and expierence the beautiful feeling. your life will become much better.
-
Maria 07/03/2010 9:12:00 AM
As a Mexican-American who was born in the US (to parents who were both born and raised in the US), I resent the number of illegals who come here and expect to be catered and pampered to as if they were invited guests and not criminals. I am an educated person who worked to pay her way through college and beyond and has always been responsible for all of her own expenses and medical care!
While I am sympathetic to this woman's plight,I feel she should not take precedence nor receive preferential treatment in getting a transplant above an American. Only American citizens(and to some limited effect, legal immigrants) should be able to reap and benefit from what America has to offer - but that's a contradiction in this day and age with all of the calamities our government keeps blundering this country into!
Call me a racist, scream that I am prejudiced, but in reality - I don't care. If they can pay the thousands of dollars that they do for a coyote, they can afford to start the groundwork to get a visa here legally. I do not feel I am responsible for providing these people with free food, housing, medical care, education, etc., simply because they are poor or illiterate. With so much poverty and hardship occurring in the US now, our goal should be Americans -not pandering to illegals who feel they deserve a break on our tax dollars.

"She was eventually transferred to Bellevue Hospital to see a cardiologist, but it was a bewildering experience. "Everyone was speaking in English," she says with a shrug." Westword are you serious?? Legal citizens of the US can't get health care and this woman sneaks into the country and expects to be spoken to in her native language AND receive better health care than most? Are you serious?? Try doing a story about the millions about to lose their unemployment benefits, about all of the small businesses closing up, all of the people losing their jobs due to outsourcing, how the homeless shelters are full, how illegal immigrants put a strain on the welfare and medical systems, etc etc.
-
Patrick 07/03/2010 8:38:00 AM
Jenny, I don't see the day coming anytime soon when "the Latinos are going to take over the country". (By the way, hon, "karma" is spelled with a "K"-you are obviously another member of that great mass of educated Latinos out there that have come to America to allow us to bask in the radiance of their wisdom...) It is sad what has happened to this woman, but it is not my responsibility to pay for her medical care, just as it is not hers to pay for mine. I pay for my own. If and when the day comes when I cannot, then so be it-I will be damned before I ask another American working man to pay for my medical care. Illegals-get the hell out of my country. We live here-you don't. You disgrace yourselves in the way you live your lives-your drugs, your crimes, your total lack of responsibility for yourselves, your families, and your children. Get out-the melting pot is full.

ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS. SHE,ALTHOUGH HEART BREAKING, IS BREAKING THE LAW. I DONT GIVE A CRAP. WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH, AMERICA STAND UP. MY FATHER IN LAW IS NOW 182,000 IN DEPT BECAUSE OF HIS HEART SURGERY. WHEN ARE WE REALLY GONNA UNITE AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. UNTIL THEN WORDS LIKE THESE ARE USELESS.
-
rokymtn mark 07/03/2010 4:13:00 AM
I am sorry, why are these illegals our problems once they get here through illegal entry? I don't feel obligated to pay for their free medical care or schooling, etc.. Mexico and other central and South American countries protect their borders and the U.S. is not supposed to? No way! "Immigration reform" is just a code word for amnesty, no consequence for coming illegally to the U.S. This must be stopped. The borders must be sealed shut. The law allowing anchor babies to be automatic U.S. citizens must be repealed. We U.S. citizens cannot continue paying the bill for all the illegals that have now come over the years and will continue in even greater numbers if anmesty is permitted. Enough is enough!

marblemason1 07/02/2010 9:59:00 PM
Cry me a river. I haven't worked but two months in the last two years. My health insurance (when I had it, lapsed a year and a half ago) My unemployment is going bone dry in about a month. If I didn't have to compete with illegals working for dirt wages I might actually be able to find something.
No Amnesty! Not now, not ever!! Why reward those who break the rules?? And while we're on the subject, why should Mexicans and South Americans in general be exempt from the rules that everyone else entering the U.S. has to abide by??
-
John 07/02/2010 7:51:00 PM
Can't these people do anything for themselves? Westword is a commie, pc ,white-hating rag.
-
mysallyjo 07/02/2010 5:10:00 PM
In allowing this article to be published it proves that Westword is out of touch with its readers. We are struggeling with massive unemployment,an invasion at our borders,2 wars, a catastrophic oil spill,a President and congress that is clueless and the threat of terrorism within in our borders. You expect compassion from us for someone who broke our laws? You gotta be kidding!
-
Dirk Nelson 07/02/2010 4:41:00 PM
It is a heart filled story, about a human being. I can show you hundreds more about US born citizens.
some who also also broke the law, but they are in prison. Why do we look the other way with these, 12 - 20+ million people breaking this law. They just want a better life. So do most americans.
Let's enforce all the laws. The laws are there for a reason. I have many relatives, who are wanting years to come to the United States legally. But with the large levels are illegals here and more coming. Most of my college educated family members shall never be allowed "space" here. We need to stop helping criminals and start helping people who value American law.

DOLLY 07/02/2010 12:51:00 PM
Our healthcare system costs have now been inflated to accommodate the unpaid services provided to illegal immigrants. Most working class citizens can now hardly afford to seek medical care for themselves. I am proud to be an American. I am neither prejudice, nor an isolationist when I state, we have to stop illegal immigration! This land of opportunity is based on individuals' financial contributions to our economy. The use of government services was never intended to be the right of anyone, but a stop gap for our unfortunate citizens.
I have a young great-niece with kidney cancer. Before she was diagnosed her doctor ordered an MRI of her abdomen. With large (unmet) deductibles, her struggling young parents turned to Children's Hospital to see if there was any financial aid available. They were told there were free services available to undocumented immigrants, but nothing to assist them. With their family's assistance, this sweet little girl received the care she needed.
There are lots of tragic medical stories! Let us hear about the working class citizen's struggle with the broken healthcare system. Anyone denying someone healthcare is heartless, right? So please will some political leader step-up and be heartless. I hear there is very expensive treatment available for $22 per month to survive without a heart?
-
Walter 07/02/2010 5:04:00 AM
The immigration debate isn't about Latinos living in America "before many territories became states." It isn't about being "anti-immigrant," or being isolationist. It is about immigration laws that are ignored by the government and by irresponsible Americans. Irrelevant historical references have no place in the illegal-immigration discussion. It is sheer demagoguery.
While Julia Amparo-Alvarado's story is sad, like many others, it is simply a chapter in a sad story that began in another country where people failed to establish for themselves a decent government. Many who immigrated to the US legally can empathize with the various miserable conditions left behind by illegal immigrants, but they can't generally empathize with the act of entering the US illegally. There isn't a "ferver to drive immigrants out" as VVM claims. Immigrants, LEGAL immigrants, are more than welcome. This supposed "project" essentially uses poverty as an excuse to break the law. There are a lot of people in the US living in poverty. Shall we now allow them to break the law because of it? May it never be so.
It is well and good to sympathize with people who are less fortunate, but let us do so in a manner that will not morally bankrupt all of us.
We ask the government to act responsibly in enforcing immigration laws. The media, Denver Westword included, should also act responsibly in publishing information about the immigration discussion. Sponsoring this VVM "project" is as irresponsible as the government's dismal enforcement of our immigration laws, and serves only to distract from the real issues that should be discussed.
-
Susan 07/02/2010 4:49:00 AM
I am so sick of Westword's pandering to the criminals I could scream. I'd love to kick somebody's butt there, but will refrain... My mantra is: Why would we want ANYONE in the US who's first act is to break the law....and who's second act is to have someone else pay for their being here??? Westword, Obama and all the other blood-suckers are sickening.

Pretty Shameful Westword. Just had friends go through heart surgery for their 4 year old. Got the the bill for over $100,000. Don't think the public is on the hook for that. They also will not get the $22 a month deal she received. Shameful.
