Two weeks later, Hampers was back in court in Littleton for the hearing on his and Ebersohl's dueling restraining order requests. When the judge called their case, they approached the bench and told her they'd decided to resolve the matter privately and had agreed not to discuss the reasons why in public. The case was dismissed.

According to Ebersohl, she and Hampers have an agreement that he won't contact her. If he does, she says, there could be "civil repercussions," though she couldn't go into detail about what those might be. After losing his restraining order case with Sherman, Ebersohl says, Hampers asked her to settle out of court with him rather than go through the judicial system. "Because he got a restraining order permanent with Deb, he didn't want another one on the court record because of his profession," she says.

A spokesman for the state medical board can't confirm or deny whether the board is investigating a complaint against Hampers. The board can sanction a doctor or revoke his privileges for a host of infractions, including a determination that the doctor is not physically, mentally or morally qualified to practice medicine. Whether or not a permanent restraining order would count would depend on the circumstances, says Chris Lines, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.

But the restraining order may be just the beginning of Hampers's legal problems.

When Sherman reported Hampers's behavior to the Denver police in March, she also said she suspected he was stealing drugs from the hospital – something she repeated at the restraining order hearing. A DPD spokesman says an investigation into Sherman's complaints is ongoing. The same is true for the complaints made to the Colorado Springs police by Ebersohl, who says she's gotten calls from both The Children's Hospital and the medical board asking about Hampers's mental health.

And last week, Sherman's new attorney, Tom Overton, filed a civil lawsuit against Hampers on behalf of Sherman in Denver District Court seeking damages and legal fees. The suit quotes from the e-mails Hampers sent Sherman and emphasizes that Hampers admitted in court to harassing Sherman in order to "keep (her) uncomfortable."

"Ms. Sherman is the victim of a crime," Overton wrote in a statement e-mailed to Westword. "She has been stalked, harassed, and specific threats have been made involving her young child. Mr. Hampers vowed to get Ms. Sherman fired from her job, and he contacted her employer and made false accusations about her."

The lawsuit alleges that as a result of Hampers's contact with 9News, Sherman's "relationship with her employer has been damaged." Sherman's boss, 9News vice president and news director Patti Dennis, who testified at the restraining order hearing, did not return a phone call seeking comment. The suit also alleges that Hampers had his lawyer contact the media, including Westword, "with the intent of publicizing private facts" about Sherman.

The lawsuit further implies that Sherman's nightmare with Hampers may not be over. In the time since Sherman won the restraining order, the lawsuit says, Hampers told a third party that "he would make the focus of his life to retaliate."
