A Novel Romance

Lust-drunk vixens and bare-chested he-men still grace the occasional cover of a romance novel. But the genre has gotten much more savvy and eclectic over the past couple of decades. With sizable crossovers into other genres like urban fantasy, science fiction, mystery and even horror, romance is back in a big way. That enduring love for, well, love is being celebrated this weekend at the Rocky Mountain Romance Convention. In addition to appearances by dozens of top authors in the field, the three-day event includes banquets, awards, contests, vendors, panel discussions and a costume ball that might just feature a ripped bodice or two.

"There has never been a large-scale event like this in the U.S.,” says the convention's co-organizer, Michele Chambers. “There’s a large annual conference for romance writers, but it’s geared toward the professional end. There’s been nothing that’s just fun for the fans, and there are so many of us who read romances. We wanted to throw a giant, fun getaway weekend for all of us hopeless romantics."

The Rocky Mountain Romance Convention starts today at 9 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Convention Center, 15500 East 40th Avenue, and continues through Sunday night. Admission is $35 per day, $125 for a weekend pass. For registration and info, visit www.romanceconventions.com.
