There’s a lot going on at this year’s Colorado Irish Festival, including kids’ workshops with the Denver Gaels and O’Connor’s Irish Stout, named for festival president Kacey O’Connor. “She’s retiring from the festival this year,” says spokesman Pat McCullough, “so Coors had a contest, a Name That Irish Stout contest, this brew that Coors is doing for the fest. So someone said, ‘All the other famous stouts are named after Irish family names, from Guinness to Murphy’s, so why not name it after Kacey O’Connor?’ And so Kacey will have a beer named after her.”

As usual, there will be the cultural village, demonstration, food, vendors and some of the best Irish music you’ll hear in one place. “Natalie MacMaster is the most familiar name to a lot of people,” says McCullough. “She’s played Planet Bluegrass, headlined shows at the Paramount, been up at Red Rocks with the Chieftains, been a headliner up at Telluride. So she’s been in the Colorado market, and it’s exciting to get her to come to the festival.” Other appearances include Ennis, Pogey, the Elders and many more. The festival opens today from 5 to 10 p.m. and runs tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission tonight is $5, $12 tomorrow and Sunday. Kids twelve and under get in for free, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, you can bring two items of non-perishable food for the Denver Rescue Mission and get in for free (you do the math — that’s a good deal).
