The Apple of Carrie Vaughn’s Eye

To fans of Carrie Vaughn's best-selling Kitty Norville series, her new stand-alone novel, Discord's Apple, may seem like a big departure. The Kitty books focus on a radio talk-show host who happens to be a werewolf, while Discord's Apple is a much more sprawling story that weaves together magic, mythology, the Trojan War, personal struggles and modern-day political strife.

But according to Vaughn, the novel is just another piece of her big fictional picture. "I actually wrote Discord's Apple right after I wrote Kitty and the Midnight Hour, the first book in the Kitty series, so I don't see it as a departure," says the Boulder-based author. "If you look at my short-story career, I've always written lots of different kinds of stories. At the time, Discord's Apple was simply the next book I wanted to write. I think it has similarities with the Kitty series — fantastical elements in a contemporary setting and a protagonist who is a young woman coming into her own."

That said, this will be the first novel that Vaughn has written from the male perspective. “Half the book is told from the point of view of Sinon, a Greek soldier from the Trojan War. I'm hoping readers will see that I have quite a wide variety of interests and see a different kind of storytelling from me."

Vaughn will read from, discuss and sign Discord's Apple — as well as the eighth and latest Kitty book, Kitty Goes to War — tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue. Call 303-322-7727 or visit www.tatteredcover.com.
