The King Swings at the Arvada Center

Set in a sad, colorless town in the Midwest, All Shook Up is a combination of Twelfth Night, The Music Man and Pleasantville set to 24 Elvis Presley songs. Opening with "Jailhouse Rock,” the show is about a young drifter who is released from a lockup and helps lift a deeply flawed, 1950s town out of "Heartbreak Hotel.” "The town is depressed and repressed, and once he rides in, people start falling in love all over the place," says director Christy Montour-Larson. "It starts with his older songs, and then, as people fall in love, the songs get sexier and people start showing more skin."

All Shook Up is a celebration of life and self-discovery. "It really has a deeper meaning than I expected," says Montour-Larson. "The play deals with the underlying theme of race relations. It's about the freedom to be who you really are and the freedom to love who you want to love." Along with other favorites like "Hound Dog" and "Blue Suede Shoes,” the musical includes many of Presley’s more obscure songs.

The play runs through August 8; tickets range from $47 to $57. For more information, call 720-898-7200 or go to www.arvadacenter.org. The Arvada Center is at 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 13. Continues through Aug. 8, 2010
