Its been four years since the Foothills Art Center last mounted the North American Sculpture Exhibition, which had previously been a biannual occurrence at the Golden gallery. But after Foothills renovated the main gallery, giving more prominence to the former churchs wall-lining stained-glass windows, FAC curator Michael Chavez thought the time was right for a sculpture show. Logistically, it seemed like it would be nice to have three-dimensional work in there rather than hanging more 2-D art that would have to compete on the walls, he says. Hence, the 2010 NASE opens today with a reception and awards presentation from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and continues through August 29.

Local sculptors Lawrence Argent and John McEnroe each lent an eye to the show, joining Chavez as NASE jurists, resulting in an exhibit thats fresh, striking and visually diverse. But dont expect the NASE to become a tradition all over again. Were not in the habit of doing things automatically here anymore, so theres no telling when well do it again, Chavez notes.
