LOCAL LOVE

Last year’s inaugural Local Flavor Festival was small. Really small. But, notes Mickki Langston of the Mile High Business Alliance and its offshoot, Colorado Local First, that was intentional. “This is a fairly intimate gathering,” Langston says. “There are plenty of huge fests in the city already, and we’re definitely a neighborhood-based, small-scale sort of thing.” Because the folksy local-vendor showcase is all about supporting the local economy and using what you can find in your own back yard, its nature is cozy. And based on the success of the first event, this year’s is growing, at least a little bit. “We’ll actually have food and beer and live music,” Langston says. “And we’ll have more vendors and activities, including a lyric-writing workshop for kids hosted by Flobots.org.”

Sample local foods and wares, groove to groups like the Ian Cooke Band and Oakhurst, chow down at visiting restaurants on wheels or have your face painted today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tattered Cover-anchored Lowenstein CulturePlex, 2508 East Colfax Avenue; those who choose to bike in can take advantage of free bicycle parking courtesy of Bike Denver. Admission is free; go to www.coloradolocalfirst.com for information.
Sat., Aug. 7, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2010
