PICTURING THE HERMAPHRODITE

Any artist would have a hard time interpreting the teeming, surreal, at times shocking prose of Denver author Daniel Grandbois. But the famed Argentine artist Alfredo Benavidez Bedoya entered Grandbois’s new book, The Hermaphrodite (An Hallucinated Memoir), through the side door. Bedoya’s vivid, kinetic, iconographic woodcuts don’t attempt to directly represent The Hermaphrodite as much as they complement it — forming a union of narrative and illustration that heightens the dreamlike power of each.

Says Grandbois of Bedoya’s contribution to The Hermaphrodite, “The artist I propositioned first referred me to Alfredo as a better fit for my work. Alfredo must have liked the fit as well, for once he had the Spanish translation and so could read the book, he began knocking out these astonishing woodcuts.”

As astonishing as Bedoya’s artwork is on the page, Denver will get a chance to see it on walls, as well: An exhibit of the originals will open at Redshift Gallery on September 9. Before that, though, Daniel Grandbois will read from and sign copies of The Hermaphrodite (An Hallucinated Memoir) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Tattered Cover Book Store, 2526 East Colfax Avenue. Admission is free. For info, call 303-322-7727 or visit www.tatteredcover.com.
