Dana Cain misses nothing, especially when it concerns one of her idols. So when the Denver promoter of pop-culture events and local artists noted months ago that Andy Warhol’s birthday fell on First Friday this year, she worked to galvanize the Art District on Santa Fe (on whose board she sits) into hosting a district-wide celebration of the man who popularized the Campbell’s soup can as an object of art. Tonight’s Andy Warhol Birthday Celebration takes place between the regular First Friday hours of 6 and 9 p.m.

Cain suggests that gallery-goers begin their backpedal into the heyday of Warhol and the Factory at the north end of the gallery drag and work their way south. There, she notes, the Center for Visual Art, 965 Santa Fe Drive (which closes earlier than many other venues), will feature limited-edition Warhol “Geronimo” posters. From there, it’s only a hop and a skip to the Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe, where Warholove, a large Cain-juried open show of Warhol-inspired works, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m., and CORE New Art Space, on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Santa Fe, hosts a canned-food drive (get it?) and a photo booth, complete with wig and glasses, for Warhol wannabes. Other events up and down the street include birthday cake at 8:30 p.m. at Boxcar Gallery, 554 Santa Fe; a Warhol Look-alike Contest at Glovinsky Gallery, 800 West Eighth Avenue; and even an off-the-wall Warhol robotic event at Gamma Two Robotics, 209 Kalamath Street. But it all winds up at Space Gallery, 765 Santa Fe, at 9 p.m. with a sparkly Exploding Santa Fe Inevitable after-party, where folks can dance to Velvet Underground cover band Sweet Nothin’ under silver Mylar balloons till midnight.
