RANCH WARES

The Anderson Ranch Art Center outside Aspen is world-famous, which is why world-famous artists go there to support it. “It’s astounding, all the creative work that’s done here,” says Barbara Bloemink, who came on as the latest executive director just a few months ago. (She was formerly at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York.) “The cultural and intellectual atmosphere is amazing, and the grounds are beautiful.”

Every summer, the center hosts the Anderson Ranch Annual Art Auction to raise funds to support its educational programs. “The auction is one of our most popular events,” notes Bloemink. This year’s version includes pieces by Betty Woodman, George Woodman, Gregory Crewdson, Anish Kapoor, George Condo, Cindy Sherman and many others.

The auction is divided between a live event, with a preview in the Patton-Malott and Gartner Galleries, and a silent one, with a preview in the Wyly Painting Building.

Tonight, there’s an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m.; the previews continue through Friday, August 13, with the auctions them-selves on August 14. Registration begins at 11 a.m. that day, followed by an outdoor lunch. The Anderson Ranch Art Center is at 5263 Owl Creek Road in Snowmass Village; for information, call 970-923-3181 or go to www.andersonranch.org.
