THE ROARING TWENTIES GET WILD

Bathtub gin, murder and an orgy set the pace for Andrew Lippa’s musical The Wild Party. Based on Joseph Moncure March’s narrative poem of the same name, The Wild Party explores the darker side of the flapper era. Set in a Manhattan apartment in 1928, the crazy evening centers around the deteriorating relationship between Queenie and Burrs — a vaudeville dancer and a vaudeville clown — and the Party to End All Parties.

“The reason we like the play is because it pushes the edge,” says Keith Rabin, artistic production manager for Gravity Defied Theatre. “It’s risky and sexy and not family-friendly. Also, the music is a wonderful rock-jazz fusion.” The story follows the tumultuous love square between Queenie and Burrs and their “friends” Kate and Black. Over the course of the evening, Black falls for Queenie. Kate loves Burrs and helps facilitate Queenie’s falling in love with Black. “In the end, someone dies,” reveals Rabin.

The Wild Party opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9000 East Colfax Avenue; tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $18 for students. For more information, go to www.rmarts.org or call 303-325-3959.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 4 p.m. Starts: Aug. 6. Continues through Aug. 22, 2010
