You can hear the influence of growing up in a musical family (drummer father, singer mother) in pretty much every one of Swedish electro/progressive house producer/DJ John Dahlbäck's tracks. Presumably, his dad's penchant for pounding the skins led him to dance music, where he could keep insistent rhythms pumping constantly and adorn them with additional layers of percussion loops for good measure. Perhaps it was his mother's singing that inspired him to include vocals on many of his tracks — though it's hard to imagine that she sang in the odd, chopped-up way he frequently incorporates the human voice. Most of all, it's simply apparent that he's a lifelong lover of sound and movement, compelled to express a unique voice and vision for dance music. Check him out when he plays Beta this Saturday, August 7.
