’CAKES FOR A CAUSE

Peter Moore was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in his first year of medical school at the University of Colorado. About the same time, a fellow med student suffered a relapse of the disease. “After my treatment, I realized that I was in the unique position of being in medical school and having an acute disease that I was learning about, and I wondered if there was some way to take the negative impact of my experience and turn it into something positive,” Moore says. To that end, he and a group of his peers started their own non-profit, Medical Students for Lymphoma Research, to promote research through funding and grants, and, perhaps, to encourage funded students to seek out careers in oncology, thereby prolonging the initial effect.

To hasten their trip up the fundraising ladder, the group came up with the idea for today’s first annual Flapjack 5K Run for Lymphoma, a family- and dog-friendly event taking place beginning at 9 a.m. in City Park, 17th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Along with the main run, there will be a stroller-and-dog division and a Short Stack Sprint for kids; registration ranges from $15 to $35 and includes the race fee, a T-shirt and unlimited sausage and pancakes after the run.
