FARM FRESH

“Dava Parr, who owns a bed-and-breakfast in Paonia called Fresh & Wyld, wanted to basically hold an event that would celebrate the local producers — whether they be farmers, winemakers or what have you,” says Jim Brett, president of Slow Food’s Western Slope chapter, by way of explaining how the annual Food, Farm, Film and Wine Festival started last year.

The 2010 incarnation will highlight the producers of Garvin Mesa. “What can go wrong?” Brett notes. “You’re touring farms and wineries that aren’t adding synthetics to the ground, to the air, to the animals, to anything. And they’re producing wonderful products that the North Fork Valley is famous for.”

Festival activities include a winery and farm tour at noon today, with stops at Azura Cellars, Stone Cottage Cellars, Terror Creek Winery, Bella Farm and Desert Weyr Farm, where endangered Black Welsh Mountain sheep roam the fields. Tonight, there’s a screen-ing of Food Fight at the Paradise Theater, followed by dinner at Fresh & Wyld, where Parr and guest chef Jim Butchart from Aspen Ajax Tavern plan to cook a family-style meal featuring produce from the Roaring Fork Valley. Tomorrow’s events include breakfast at the theater with a screening of Fresh, and brunch at Orchard Valley Farms. Admission is $125 for the full weekend, $100 for Saturday only and $35 for Sunday only.
