SCREEN TALK

We’re in love with movies, that’s pretty clear. But do we know why we love them? Get under the skin of what might at first seem like simple, cheap entertainment for the masses at the Denver Film Society’s new Colorado Cinema Salon, a monthly film discussion series featuring clips, special guests and informal talk on a variety of changing themes, moderated by former Rocky Mountain News film critic Robert Denerstein.

The series kickoff, “Blood on Our Hands: Morality and Violence in Movies,” starts tonight at 7 p.m. in Gallery 30 at Starz FilmCenter and features a disparate pair of guest speakers — Archbishop Charles Chaput (who is quite knowledgeable about film, Denerstein notes) and local filmmaker/actor donnie l. betts — offering differing, but not necessarily divisive, views on the subject. “We want to bring together people you might not normally see on same platform,” Denerstein says, adding that his hope for the series is to keep things open and easy. “We don’t want the format to turn into a jail of ideas.”

Little chance of that happening, if you consider the inaugural topics: On September 23, filmmaker Daniel Junge and state senator Michael Johnston will weigh in on a more personal level with “The Movies in My Life,” and “Festival Programmers on the Hot Seat,” an October 14 talkback featuring Starz Denver Film Festival programmers, will provide a behind-the-scenes primer for Colorado filmmakers and the public just three weeks before the fest unspools. Starz is in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus; admission to the salons ranges from $7 to $9.75. Get more information at www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter or 303-595-3456.
