SOUTHERN COMFORT

More than a hundred home chefs — all of them male — will strut their culinary stuff tonight at the African-American Leadership Institute’s Look Who’s Cooking Now black-tie benefit, which raises funds to advance the nonprofit’s development programs. “What makes this event so unique,” explains volunteer LaSheita Sayer, “is the fact that none of these gentlemen who are cooking are big names that everyone recognizes. They’re all just average, everyday men of color in the community who generously donate their time, energy and money to a cause they believe in.”

This year, the chefs include a local business owner, a sales representative, an employee of the United States Postal Service and a director at Denver Health. “They’re from all walks of life, careers and industries,” notes Sayer. And although none of them work in professional kitchens, they’ll each prepare a favorite dish for approximately thirty people — which means that if you’re after cornbread or catfish, both of which were popular plates at last year’s fundraiser, you’ll want to get there promptly at 6 p.m., when the doors open. “A lot of the food is great Southern comfort food, and it goes fast,” warns Sayer.

The event is at the Crowne Plaza at 15540 East 40th Avenue in Aurora. Tickets, which include food samplings and a concert by Colorado R&B great Sammy Mayfield, are $65 per person; you can buy yours at 303-343-9389.
