Will Bike for Laughs

It’s safe to say that no comedian has ever ridden a bike quite as far as Tom Snyders, the Bicycling Comedian. Over the last 23 years, Snyders has ridden his bike over 150,000 miles on six continents ― in 33 countries and all 50 states. And mostly to gigs.

It started out, as these odd accomplishments always seem to, by accident, when Snyders was on his way from Illinois to Las Vegas for a job. “My $300 car just blew up,” he recalls. “It literally exploded.” He made it the rest of the way to Vegas by bus, but for transportation to his next gig in Des Moines, he decided to try a different approach: He rode an old bike. The whole 1,600 miles. “So when I was about 200 miles away, I thought to check my voice mail,” he recounts. “Turns out the club I was supposed to play had burned down.”

Since that anti-climactic start, Snyders has basically been on the road. Tonight he lands at the Boulder International Fringe Festival, where he’ll perform his act, You Can’t Bring That Bike in Here, at 8 p.m. at the Naropa University Performing Arts Center, 2130 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder. Tickets are $9 to $12 (or two-for-one tonight and tomorrow), and the show will repeat several times through August 28; go to www.boulderfringe.com for more info.
Fri., Aug. 20, 8 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 21, 10 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 22, 3:30 p.m.; Wed., Aug. 25, 7 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 28, 7:30 p.m., 2010
