Asphalt jungle: For years, Denver police thought this parking lot was the most dangerous spot in LoDo. What's changed?

The photograph offers a moment frozen in time: Four teenage girls playing dress-up, looking impatiently into the camera. An image nobody would have thought twice about if it hadn't turned out to be one of the last moments of innocence, before terrible things happened.

The photo is hidden away somewhere on Tiffaine Casados's MySpace page, a souvenir of the night everything changed. When you're eighteen, life can turn upside down in a moment.

Especially in lower downtown at Let Out.

What the picture says:

It's October 31, 2007, and Club Bash is having a costume party. Tiffaine has come with her best friend, Christine, and Christine's cousin Melissa and Melissa's friend Bertha, all in high heels and ready to break hearts. Their first stop is the bathroom, to check their hair and ask another girl to take their picture. That's Tiffaine on the right, an exquisite Tinker Bell: hair pinned up, green leotard, fairy wings. Next to her is Christine, in the Little Red Riding Hood cowl, and on the far left is Melissa, dressed as some Harry Potter character. And nobody can tell who Bertha is supposed to be.

What the picture doesn't say:

Halloween is one of the biggest drinking nights of the year, dreaded by every cop in LoDo. And no event of the local club scene circa 2007 was as ripe for trouble as the Boo Bash at Denver's largest hip-hop club, a 12,500-square-foot monster venue at 19th and Blake streets that drew its following from all over the metro area — frat boys and gangsta wannabes, 'hood diehards and the bridge-and-tunnel crowd from far-flung suburbs, many of them under 21 and not allowed in the bar area. Some clubbers considered Bash too ghetto, too packed or too rude, a place where fresh young things could count on getting thoroughly frisked at the door and then thoroughly groped in the booty-to-booty crush of the dance floor.

Tiffaine didn't see it that way. Ever since she'd turned eighteen in June, she'd been coming to LoDo practically every weekend to dance and check out the scene, with regular visits to Bash. She'd met a few jerks, but a lot of nice people, too. A senior who pulled good grades at Hidden Lake High School while working part-time at Rave in the Westminster Mall, she figured she was old enough to hit the club on a school night if she wanted to. So that Wednesday evening she told her mother, Julie Baca, that she was going downtown with friends, and Baca replied, "Be safe."

"Always," Tiffaine said.

The girls arrived at the Boo Bash shortly after ten and stayed through last call. The place was wall-to-wall girls in costumes, smooth dudes in athletic wear and even some genuine athletes; Tiffaine spotted Denver Nuggets Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson and Kenyon Martin. Around 1:30 the lights came up, and staff began hustling the eighteen-to-twenty crowd out the door that exited onto 19th Street.

Tiffaine went with the flow, arm-in-arm with Christine. On the sidewalk she ran into Levion, a young man she'd met before in the club, and his brother Nikko. The four of them chatted as they headed south across 19th to the block-long parking lot on the west side of Market, where Levion's car was parked.

Streams of people poured all around them — the Let Out crowd heading for their cars and other people who just seemed to be hanging out around the lot. Tiffaine gave Levion a hug and said goodbye.

A horn sounded. A white woman in a silver Kia honked at a clump of men blocking her path through the lot. The men — mostly black, possibly one Hispanic, several of them dressed in red — surrounded the car and began kicking and thumping on it.

"Blood!" someone yelled.

They smashed the driver's window. One of them started hitting the woman in the head with his fists and kicking her in the face.

The woman's boyfriend, a black man, jumped out of the passenger side. He, too, was quickly surrounded, kicked and punched.

For a moment, Tiffaine and Christine stood there, transfixed. Then they veered away from the fight and began walking hurriedly toward their own vehicle, which was parked a block away. Other people were rushing to their cars, too.

A shirtless black man threw a traffic cone at the driver of a big white Chevy Tahoe. "The only reason you don't get out and fight like a man is because you have a gun on you," the bare-chested one said.

The driver poked a chrome-plated handgun out the window as he took off. He fired once — maybe at the shirtless man, maybe the Kia driver's boyfriend or maybe someone else. But it was Tinker Bell who went down.

Tiffaine lay on her right side on the asphalt. She didn't feel any pain. She didn't feel anything. She put her hand on her back and it came away bloody. Her keys, her cell phone — covered in blood. Then cops and paramedics were all around her, cutting off her costume and telling her to hang on, and she's lying there naked, wings clipped, trying to hold onto the shreds of her leotard and thinking maybe she's going to die.

LODO in Spanish means MUD, a neighborhood true to its name. From the original Wild West Gunslingers to the modern day version Gangbangers, this area has been violent for 150 years! Just because House Flipper Hickenlooper taped & floated the area does not mean its spirit has been removed. What the article fails to mention is the thrill of the streets which attracts people as a little violence is the pill of choice to cure suburban doldrums. Rather than trying to eradicate the problem Denver police need to learn to deal with it. Denver police should be sent to the French Quarter in New Orleans or New York's Lower East Side for training. Not to make it racial but white people do need to stop listening to buzzwords such as historic, trendy, hip, and urban. Use common sense to evaluate a situation. As an example, reread page 3 and analyze everything Heather Hiltz did wrong as she attempted to use suburban tactics in the urban jungle. First off she said she was tipsy (buzzword) but I would argue that she was dunk. Second, she wanted to be the hero by saving the drunk who fell and hurt their neck. That is not her responsibility. Finally, when she got “Aurora” on that black bitch she should have fought back when confronted, those were fighting words. If the men tried to go after the husband he should have ran as fast as he could to get help. They might have let the ladies fight. However, to defuse the situation she should have ignored the black bitch or profusely apologized explaining that she talking about somebody else. Lie to the group and blame the establishment: club security, paramedics, cops or whitey hoping they fall for it. Remember in a situation like this do not be afraid to run, if necessary run back to the club or any place where there is backup. Do not stand around waiting to get beat up or worse killed.

Heather, you girls were in an establishment that served alcohol, loaded with "players" and celebrities and men and women who were drinking alcohol....do I have that part right? If my children told me they were going to a place like that I would have taken their car keys away. It was a dangerous location! I would not have simply said "Be safe." She didn't deserve to be shot, the parking owner should not have to have paid money because they were not security personnel. She was in a dangerous place because her mother said "ok" and, unfortunately, gang bangers were itching for a fight. The police, not perfect, were not in place, but, I believe the problem is with, primarily, with the goddamn gangbangers who have no respect for anyone and the fact Denver Police don't demolish them.

  • Alan Prendergast 08/26/2010 2:16:00 PM

The suggestion that any mention of race in the article, regardless of context, somehow makes the piece (and me)racist is too ridiculous for response. The real question is relevance. The so-called "wildings" in 2004 and 2009 featured racially motivated attacks. Race was also a factor in the Hiltz assault--and it's quite possible that the incident in which Tiffaine Casados was injured started that way, too. The suspect in that shooting still hasn't been caught, and details that might lead to his arrest--details such as the car he drove, his affiliation with the Bloods, his race--are certainly important. No journalist would ignore important facts just because they don't fit someone else's agenda. As the story points out, some of the victims of the violence around that parking lot are also African American or Hispanic; but I didn't mention Tiffaine Casados' ethnic background (she describes herself as half-black, half-Hispanic) because I don't think it had anything to do with what happened that night. The randomness and idiocy of gang violence affects everyone, regardless of race.

Hey yo, Cash Money.... Lemme ask you one more thing...while you're spitting out all this bullshit about bias this, crooked cops, etc.... What's your opinion on 30-40 fuckin' coward ass brothers attacking people downtown BECAUSE THEY WERE WHITE? What you gotta say about that? Cause I'll be honest, the most racist people I've seen around here are those pussy ass bitches that attacked white people downtown 5-1, and douchebags like you screaming racism at every turn. Last I checked there weren't white people goin into the hoods and knockin up black females....last I checked, it wasn't white dudes from Littleton doin drive-byes in Park Hill....last I checked, it wasn't white dudes name Brian Hicks and Willie Clark snipin' witnesses..... Fuckin coward ass bitches.....clean up your own shit instead of blaming whitey for everything. Fuckasses.

  • tyrell 08/26/2010 9:30:00 AM

Kash/L Marroquin- Blah, blah, blah...nothin' like blaming whitey for all of your problems, eh? 70% out of wedlock birth...whitey. Gang violence...whitey. Highest-crime neighborhoods in the city...whitey. Accountability? Tell me, Kash, what exactly is happening to "push black people" out of their neighborhoods? Details, please.

  • Kash Lewis 08/26/2010 1:10:00 AM

Alan Prendergast contributes to gentrification by putting the flash light on the elephant in the room. this propaganda article was written 3 weeks after former mayor Wellington Webb attended a protest rally in the 5 points concerning Black Businesses and black residents being pushed out of there communities. Crooked cops, bias media outlets and undercover racist work toghther. #imjussayn

  • John 08/25/2010 3:41:00 PM

Give me a break. Yes this is a terrible tragedy but the bigger tragedy is using this to distract, minimize or justify the unforgivable beligerence and violence that permeates the Denver Police force.

  • L. Marrqouin 08/24/2010 6:06:00 PM

chris, Listen to you, describing a question about media bias as PC run amok, silly of you not to address the question. I wonder if Alan would describe what happened in Ft Collins as something like "White Red Neck Riot Ruins Festival". I haven't heard mostly white used to describe the rioters there yet!

  • chris 08/24/2010 3:12:00 AM

    L. Marroquin- The better question is, why do you have a problem with them referencing the ethnicity? Political correctness run amok? Shame? Do you also have a problem with Latino and black "leaders" turning absolutely everything that happens into a racial incident?

  • Ronald Walther 08/23/2010 9:35:00 PM

This has been another typical incident within the downtown district of Denver. This type of violence started in the late 50's and has no sign of ever changing. I have been mugged by over ten Mexicans during a routine night of drag racing on 16th Street back in the early part of 1965. This was only one of several altercations that I experienced during the years that I lived in Denver Colorado. How brave these bangers are when they out number you five ten twenty to one. This will never change and has worsened over the past years starting from the projects on Federal Blvd to the projects in lower Denver. There are not enough police officers within the State of Colorado to curtail the actions of these low life scum bag gang bangers.

  • Heather 08/23/2010 6:18:00 PM

permissive parents??u dont even know us!who the hell r u 2 judge???the wernt at the bar they were in the lot,and u would know that if u understood the article!!and no..i dont wish any of it on my worst enemy, and no its not racist.that's how people describe suspects!and the police suck!!the owners of that lot deserved to pay!!i warned them, that's the point!!and im glad she got what she deserved, not justice..but peace of mind!!!

  • L. Marroquin 08/23/2010 5:42:00 PM

Why do you need to describe everyone involved as "Black, White, Mostly Black, Possibly one Hispanic" in your article? I did not see where you described the Cops and Paramedics as "Black, White or Hispanic, do you not see what you are doing?

  • chuck 08/22/2010 4:29:00 PM

im not a racist but it is obvious where the problem is originating from....social services, welfare, ...

  • midge 08/22/2010 4:20:00 PM

No one deserves to be assaulted or shot. What were teenagers doing in a bar at those hours in what is known to be a dangerous area late at night? Why are parking lot owners expected to act like police? You rent the space...so now are owners of rental apartments expected to provide protection for their tenants? Minimum wage workers should not be expected to protect people in a parking lot. I can't believe the lot owner settled...why? the real story should have been about permissive parents or cleaning up the gang problem in Denver.

  • Heather 08/22/2010 6:16:00 AM

hey pave,it would b a big deal if u got paralyzed,or beat to shit,so u can go get a brain..and realize, the shit that happens can happen to you!!

  • Pave' Stiletto 08/21/2010 11:58:00 PM

    Another nigger fight. BFD.

  • chris 08/21/2010 11:50:00 PM

Jayo- Right, because a law-abiding citizen never offs a criminal douchebag. Never. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 3-4 times in Denver this year alone where some fuck bit just a tad off more than they could handle. It's really only a matter of time before the same thing happens downtown with one of these scumbags and I can guarantee you won't see many tears.

  • jayo 08/21/2010 2:24:00 AM

Is loling at "Bruce" and his Walter Mitty like fantasies of blowing people away. Yeah right, dude. Back to the article, so what's up with these cops? Do they only go around shooting unarmed, defenseless people? I have no idea why they would say they can't go onto a private lot when they have no hesitation to go into a persons house and shoot them in the middle of the night. I guess the lesson to draw from this is if you don't want to be a victim of police violence, you have to put a scare into them so they'll leave you alone to do whatever you want.

  • Jemarcus 08/21/2010 1:08:00 AM

"We have experienced a large number of individuals who gather in the parking lots in the 1800 block of Market in order to meet with the out crowd from The Bash," Davis wrote. "There appears to be a direct correlation in the number of reports of violent acts...and the format of the music being played at these clubs (ie: hip-hop) on the nights in question." I.E. - Direct correlation between crime and presence of blacks...

  • Heather 08/20/2010 4:39:00 PM

Never leave home w/out it...that and a bat in my truck...a couple years back we lost a family member..shot to death....that and this has taught us a very hard lesson!!!!it will never happen like that again!!Weapons r a vertue!!!

  • ryan 08/20/2010 9:48:00 AM

This is why everyone should own a pistol, dumbfucks would always have a nagging doubt that this man in his 3 piece suit, having dinner with his wife might blow their ass to hell and make society a better place. We need more people like Bruce, its a proven fact 100% of dead criminals never commit crimes again.

  • Ray Denonville 08/20/2010 9:28:00 AM

Denver is a very corrupt city.

  • Chris 08/20/2010 6:55:00 AM

Wait...you mean to tell me that pieces-of-shit cowardly thugs have been going crazy in Lodo long before the racist black-on-white attacks of the past year (that Hickenlooper apparently had no clue about)? *Shocker* Seriously, does anyone expect a different outcome when you have places like Bash that cater to the gangsta-bling ghetto trash? Bruce, I'll be the first one cheering if the situation you described ever happens. Nothing would put an end to these punkass 10 on 1 jumping street fucks than a slug to the dome.

  • Heather 08/20/2010 5:08:00 AM

meylssa-im very sorry for your friend,im the witness in this case....and i hope she knows, that im fighting for her!!shes been on my mind the whole time, and IF they would have taken the proper security measures,we'd know who shot her...but because they are careless, well never know who did it to her....or us and for every1 eles...drinking and gangs starting crap FOR NO REASON are two TOTALLY different things!!!!!!

  • Yvonne 08/20/2010 1:35:00 AM

Joe - Maybe your attention span needs expanding or it has become shorten by too much reading of Internet briefs to recognize good writing. As for drinking in your home and driving drunk afterwards, the difference is that in your home you are serving yourself, but in the bar someone else is serving you. As anote, people have been been found at fault for serving liquor in their home to a person who left drunk and killed someone. In fact, I not invited certain people to my house because I know I cannot control their drinking while there.

  • Bruce 08/20/2010 12:33:00 AM

This article is why I never walk around Lodo without carrying my pistol. I'm really looking forward to the day that I get to execute a worthless ghetto thug in public on the street because he assaults me. REALLY looking forward to it. I'll be smiling as I do it. Something for you brainless, worthless scabs on society to think about. Best advice for a gang member? Just kill yourself.

  • Melyssa 08/19/2010 11:25:00 PM

I am the melyssa in this article about my friend tiffanie! none of you people can say anything, judging, bad or rude, you were not there! you do not know the experience for her or for myself and the other two. she over came it and over came the possible paralaysis she could have been stuck with because, yes GANG MEMEBERS.

  • Heather 08/19/2010 11:19:00 PM

This story is very inmportant to me!! it shows that this lot is dangerous..and i TOLD THEM THAT!!! the owners, and their attorney could give 2 sh*** about us or her!! that's rediculous!!im glad he wrote this story!!and i hope my story will bring forward others..that this has happend 2 in this lot..they said they have no idea how dangerous it was...yah right!!!we dint deserve what we got,and neither did she!!!and if they took percaution,we'd know who did it!!

  • rufusmcbufus 08/19/2010 6:21:00 PM

I am ordering that all the "gangstas" disposed of now. Is that too much to ask? Our species begs for some culling. -rufus

  • Notorious Kelly 08/19/2010 4:20:00 PM

Bars exist for sinister reasons. Expect sinister results.

  • Steve 08/19/2010 2:18:00 PM

Well, Joe, it's people like you who keep "Cliff Notes" in business. I found the article fascinating. A lot of information about the problems downtown that I haven't seen anywhere else. And, as it points out, the police can't be everywhere all the time.

  • Joe 08/19/2010 4:54:00 AM

Yvonne, respectfully, bullsh@t first of all the article is another of Westwords overblown long winded go nowhere articles, taking 10 pages to say what could be said in one good paragraph. besides that why the hell should bar tenders or wait staff be responsible to police the patrons, you can go to the liquor store and buy as much booze as you like jump in the car and whipe out a small nighborhood, that doesn't make the cashier at the liquor store responsible for your behavior. How about tasking our police with the job of policing, isn't PROTECT AND SERVE somewhere in their job description? if they weren't to busy beating up kids or handing out traffic tickets maybe they could actually do something to fight crime!

  • Yvonne 08/18/2010 11:15:00 PM

Alan - My compliments - another top-notch writing job from a real pro. The problems continue in LoDo, and it is not only gang members in half empty parking lots a Let Out causing it. Several weeks ago my daughter was beaten up by a woman outside a LoDo bar. Excessive drinking all around was the fuel. Bars should be slapped with a heavy fine and lose their license after a set number of citations for continuing to serve already intoxicated customers. The bartenders and wait staff know when they are serving someone who has too much to drink, but in the never-ending chase after that last dime, they continue to serve people who are obviously drunk. More security, cameras and dress codes are not the answer. If people cannot police themselves then it is up to the bars licensed to serve the alcohol to do so by limiting the alcohol intake that is the fuel for much of this violence.
