Taste the Language

If the closest thing you know to a foreign language is “Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto” and the last ethnic food you had was at Taco Bell, maybe it’s time for a refresher course. Get both in one place tonight at University College’s A Taste of Languages, annual modern languages gala from the University of Denver's continuing education program.

“The idea is to mix community with language and culture,” says Modern Languages academic director Alison Nishi, “and to give people an idea of what our language courses are like.” You pick the language you want to sample when you RSVP, and after a meet-and-greet with the dean and instructors, you get a thirty-minute “mini-lesson” that features food from the culture associated with the language. If you like it, you’ll get a chance to sign up for courses, and UC will make it easier on the pockets by giving away two $200 scholarships during the evening – not too shabby a return on a free event.

And for that, we say domo. Domo arigato. The event takes place tonight between 6 and 8 p.m. at Sturm Hall, 2000 East Asbury on the DU campus. To RSVP or find out more, go to www.universitycollege.du.edu or call 303-871-2291.
Tue., Aug. 31, 6-8 p.m., 2010
