Telling Stories

The stories in Tales of an Englishman are about Matthew Taylor, whose one-man show opens tonight at Bovine Metropolis Theatre. “But the topics we always discuss in most stories are universal,” he says. “Different people relate to different stories because they've been in very similar situations. So that's going to affect how people react to them, but one underlying thing with the stories is they're true, actual stories, about some of the strange and wonderful things that have happened to me. And I think that really resonates with people.”

Each night, Taylor will read six or seven personal essays on stage, and the readings will change every night. “It's just a lot of honesty,” Taylor says. “They're very inclusive, they're fun and they're lighthearted, and they're not really cynical or dark so much, because that's not who I am. I'm fortunate in the sense that people always seem to enjoy them and like them. There's usually a lot of laughter, and there are quite often tears.”

The show runs nightly at 8 p.m. through August 28 at Bovine, 1527 Champa Street. Admission is $19; make reservations by calling 303-322-6750.
