Tour de Olympus

The goddess of love is taking her tithings from pedal-pushers today to benefit Greenhouse Scholars, a Boulder-based nonprofit offering college scholarships, mentoring and academic support to high-performing, under-resourced students. Now in its third year, the ladies-only Venus de Miles has tripled in size: Ride priestess Teresa Robbins says she’s expecting 2,100 women. Route options include 33-, 51- and 67-mile routes, all starting at 7 a.m. from Prospect Park in Longmont. On-site registration is $115.

“I think there’s something really magical about riding with hundreds of other women and the feeling of sisterhood and camaraderie that comes with it,” Robbins says. “Many of our riders come out with their moms and sisters and daughters and best friends, and it’s just a day of celebrating, coming together as women and supporting a great cause as we’re pedaling. It’s a party on wheels, complete with gourmet food, men in drag, great music and spa services.”

The longest route runs through Longmont, Hygiene, Lyons, Jamestown and Niwot, through scenery worthy of the ride’s Olympian namesake. Lest the guys feel left out, Robbins wants it known that men are welcome to worship at the cult of Venus: “We’ll be needing lots of volunteers to staff the support stations.” For more information, visit www.venusdemiles.com.
