Eat, Drink and Be Local

After days of cooking demonstrations, film documentaries focusing on the future of food and farming, and a Flat Iron chef battle, the week-long Eat Local! marathon wraps up today with the Local Foodshed Commons and Conference, a wellspring of workshops, exhibitions and presentations by gardeners, farmers and local business owners.

“This is all about strategic thinking — connecting the dots between the environment, economics and energy, and all of the speakers we have lined up understand these connections,” says Lynette Marie Hanthorn, executive director of Transition Colorado, the Boulder-based nonprofit that hosted the events. “The real focus is on understanding where our food comes from and where it’s going, and ensuring that we support local farms and produce, which strengthens our local economy.”

Also on tap tonight: the Eat Local! Celebration, a harvest-gathering of farmers, musicians and chefs who will peddle local, organic food samplings. The conference, which is free, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom, in the UMC on the University of Colorado-Boulder campus, while the Eat Local! party takes root from 6 to 9 p.m. in the outdoor pavilion of the Millennium Harvest House, 1345 28th Street; tickets are $20.
