Architect Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch in Saint Louis still looks futuristic even though it was designed over a half century ago. The same could be said for his classic furniture. The chairs and tables Saarinen designed look like they came right off the deck of a space-ship, and they’re more than fifty years old.

The Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art is hosting The Furniture of Eero Saarinen: Designs for Everyday Living, a traveling show devoted to these out-of-this-world designs. But this being the Kirkland, the original effort is simply the core of a much larger presentation, with director Hugh Grant having supplemented it substantially with pieces from the museum’s collection and from private collectors. He has also included work by other artists from Saarinen’s generation.
“This show has already been to several other places.” says Grant. “But I like to imagine that even if visitors had already seen the exhibit elsewhere, they’d be newly captivated by this version, where Saarinen’s designs are integrated into a greater whole.”
