Despite having been together for only a short time and not playing many local shows, Tennis (due on Friday, September 10, at the Larimer Lounge) has stirred some buzz outside of Denver through write-ups on Pitchfork, Gorilla vs. Bear and, most recently, the New York Times blog. Inspired in part by having heard The Shirelles' "Baby It's You" for the first time while on an eight-month yacht trip in the Atlantic, the band has crafted atmospheric wall-of-sound pop indebted to Phil Spector that's similar to what's been swimming around the underground for the past few years. The music of Tennis, which is kindred to that of Talulah Gosh, Black Tambourine and the C86 bands, is hardly groundbreaking. Nonetheless, there's a charmingly stripped-down summer breeziness to it that hints at greater things to come.
