In the Hole

Whether you’re tossing it in a back yard, at a bar or at the county fair, cornhole is a game that’s fun to play — and even more fun to say. Today, a slew of two-person teams will do plenty of both at the inaugural Cajun Classic Cornhole Tournament at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The point of the game is to toss a bean bag — they used to be filled with corn — at a plywood board with holes cut out of it. Points are scored depending on whether the beanbag makes it partially or all the way through the cornhole.

“I’ve only played it once myself, but I wanted to do something creative,” says Brandon Tosti, who heads Sports for a Cause, which organized the tournament. “I wanted to be able to invite as many people as possible, of any skill level.”

Proceeds from the event — which will also include jambalaya and beer — will benefit the charity’s upcoming volunteer rebuilding trip to New Orleans, which is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. “We’re hoping to raise $2,000 to $3,000 and hopefully grow this into our signature event,” Tosti says.

Dick’s is located at 6000 Victory Way in Commerce City (near 60th Avenue and Quebec Street). The tournament will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission for a two-person team is $70, which includes a guaranteed minimum of three games against other opponents, plus food and drink.
