Stone Cold

If you watched the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, there’s a good chance you saw some curling. You probably thought, “Shuffleboard on ice? “Most people have only seen curling on the Olympics,” says Joanne Frazer, a board member for the Denver Curling Club. “And those players have been curling a long time. They make it look so easy and effortless and graceful, but not everyone is graceful when they first try.” In fact, one of the first on-ice lessons of the Club’s Learn to Curl classes is how to slide without falling over. “A very common comment,” notes Frazer, “is, ‘Oh, this isn’t as easy as it looks.’ People are surprised to find that it takes strength and balance.” Not to mention strategy and knowledge of a lot of unfamiliar terminology.

Two-week classes — offered today and September 24 or September 18 and 25 — cost $55 and are held at the Ice Ranch, 841 Southpark Drive in Littleton. Times vary, and space is limited. Get more information at www.denvercurlingclub.com or by calling 303-321-1107.
Fridays; Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 17. Continues through Sept. 25, 2010
