Walk, Run or Bike for a Cause

It can take as few as four or five sessions with a licensed therapist to move most troubled teens away from considering suicide, but too often, teens don’t get the help they need. So, in 2002, after Jefferson County’s Green Mountain High School saw four student suicides in one school year, the Second Wind Fund was created to help teens find that help.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens nationwide, and the second leading cause of injury death in Colorado,” says Kevin Shipley, executive director of the fund. “It’s also one of the most easily preventable causes of death.”

Today’s ninth annual Second Wind Fund Walk/Run/Ride begins at 9 a.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 West Sixth Avenue in Golden, and will benefit Second Wind by helping it enlarge its network of licensed therapists. There’s a 5K run, a three-mile walk, and two- or four-mile bike rides, as well as a memorial dove release, a free BBQ, and a community resource fair.

Registration is $33 for adults and $18 for students and seniors. Go to www.SWFMD.org for more information.
