Not So Itsy-Bitsy

Get a leg up on the titans of the spider world tonight at Legend of the Tarantula, a class for adults created to complement the Butterfly Pavilion’s new exhibit of the same name. That show is a Victorian-themed peek into the life and times of everyone’s favorite giant arachnid — and the class will go even deeper down the spider hole. “It’s kind of an exploration of what they did in the 1800s, when they were first learning about tarantulas,” explains Jennifer Doane, marketing director at the Butterfly Pavilion. “That is what you’re doing when you explore the exhibit.”

Presumably the Victorian re-creation won’t stretch to fainting because your corset is too tight, but it will include learning about the tarantula’s anatomy, habitat, diet and cultural significance through interactive displays. Several of the species will be out for up-close examination; you’ll even be able to hold Rosie, a Chilean Rose Hair tarantula.

The class runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Butterfly Pavilion, 6252 West 104th Avenue in Westminster, and repeats on October 15 and November 5. Tickets are $15, or $8.50 for Pavilion members; for more information, visit www.butterflies.org or call 303-469-5441.
Fri., Sept. 24, 5-6:30 p.m.; Fri., Oct. 15, 5-6:30 p.m.; Fri., Nov. 5, 5-6:30 p.m., 2010
