Chamber pop has been done to death at this point. But with Lady Parts, Katie Gold and Becky Christian have taken the idea to another realm. Using classical and electronic instruments, the duo writes songs that seem to come right out of a William Morris or George MacDonald fantasy novel, with transporting melodies and a bit of a baroque sound tempered by modern sensibilities. If Henry Darger had lived to see his life's work become a major motion picture, this music would be the perfect score. The dynamic between the two players, as well as the songwriting itself, suggests travel and choreographed movement, suggesting perhaps a background in theater. Like a striking watercolor, Lady Parts (due on Friday, September 24 at the hi-dive) captures a moment in time without giving away all its secrets.
