Happy Trails

If your kids have been sitting around the house playing video games and whining, now might be the time to get some grit in their teeth — and the Colorado Mountain Bike Association’s sixth annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day celebration at Bear Creek Lake Park could do the trick. “Bear Creek Lake Park is one of the hidden gems of the local mountain-biking scene,” says Andrew Goodwillie, a member of the association’s advisory council. “There are miles and miles of trails out there, many of them very accessible to beginner riders.”

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, there will be workshops on bike maintenance, basic skills and advanced techniques, as well as a park naturalist on hand to talk about respecting the environment and the rules of the trail. Breakfast, lunch, bike tuneups, and swag bags from local bike shops and manufacturers are included. The event, at Pelican Point Shelter, 5600 West Morrison Road in Lakewood, is free and open to kids ages six to fourteen, but registration is required at www.comba.org.

“Mountain biking is a great opportunity for a young person to challenge themselves physically, build self-confidence in their ability to take risks and test their boundaries,” Goodwillie says. “You’d be surprised how many local kids never get out and take advantage of it.”
