Process Makes Perfect

Photographer Mark Sink says his current show, Mark Sink Photographs 1975-2010: Encounters With the Past, at the Byers-Evans House Gallery, isn’t so much a retrospective as it is a survey of techniques he’s used over the years, from lo-fi toy and Diana cameras to the colloidion wet-plate process he works with today. Although it’s not always obvious to the layman, process is what art photography is really all about. A mash-up of portraits, landscapes and still lifes from different periods of Sink’s career, the show stays on view through October 31.

Sink will give a talk and gallery walk-through today at 11 a.m., following his own photographic “timeline” along the way; on October 16 from noon to 2:30 p.m., he and partner Kristin Hatgi will give a colloidial wet-plate demonstration using photos taken on site. Guests can also enter a raffle during the event, which is co-hosted by the Colorado Photographic Arts Center; the winner will have the honor of being Sink’s next portrait sitter. The Byers-Evans House is at 1310 Bannock Street; both events are free. For more information, call 303-620-4933 or go to www.historycolorado.org/be.
