Squeal Squad
A little more than twenty years ago, Fred Dekker’s Monster Squad — a cult classic about a group of kids who are called upon to use their love of monster movies to fight real monsters — charmed a generation of tweens, spawning a cult that’s still going strong today. Those fans demanded, and got, a DVD release a few years ago, and since then, the film’s following has only grown, expanding into a second generation. It’s easy to see why: Monster Squad is one of those rare movies that is just as charming when you watch it as an adult as it was the first time you saw it as a wide-eyed kid who sorta still believed that monsters might be real.
“Even if you’re a year or two past that suspend-disbelief part of it, it’s still the kind of an adventure movie that everyone likes to go to,” explains Andre Gower, the now-grown child star of the film. “How many movies, especially in that day — and there’s none now — are there where you you’ve got twelve- and thirteen-year-olds roaming around, shooting guns and blowing shit up? You can’t make that today!”
Maybe not, but you can see it on the big screen tonight and tomorrow at 10 p.m. at the Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus. You can also meet Gower, who will introduce the film, answer questions about it and sign memorabilia for fans afterward. And if you need more reason than that to venture out, there’s also a special pre-movie Monster Mash Friday at 8:30 p.m., with free beer, pizza and music.
