Think Pink

Organizers of the eighteenth annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure are expecting as many as 60,000 people to walk and run today at the Pepsi Center. And that’s good news for breast cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment efforts, says spokeswoman Amarilis Viera-Simoes. The Denver affiliate of the organization funds 37 projects, to the tune of $2.7 million a year. “This year we have even more needs, because we’ve expanded from serving twelve counties to serving nineteen counties, about 69 percent of the Colorado population,” adds Viera-Simoes. “We’re promoting a new program, Doctors for the Cure, to help send a message of commitment from local health care professionals. One in seven women in Colorado will have breast cancer in their lifetime, which is higher than the national average, so even though these events have been an amazing success story, we know we still have our work ahead of us.”
