She's Cho Funny

Margaret Cho manages to bring the funny even when she’s talking about not-so-funny issues — like beauty standards that demand impossible things from women. In her new standup show, Cho Dependent, she merges music with her comedy. (Maybe it’ll help prepare you for Cho Dependent, her album featuring collaborations with Tegan & Sara, Ani DiFranco and many other musical heavyweights.)

“It’s just another way of doing standup comedy, with songs that are also jokes,” she explains. “It’s fun for me, and I have a strong voice, which I want to use! Plus, it was an excuse to be able to work with some of my favorite musicians: Tegan & Sara, Patty Griffin, Fiona Apple and Jon Brion, among many others. Oh, and Tommy Chong even makes an appearance on the new CD.”

The biggest challenge with the new show has been playing live, “which is still hard, but I love it,” she says. “I also am singing to backing tracks so I can retain the integrity of the fantastic production on my album. And the most fun is doing all the new material I have.”

According to Cho, “This is the best show yet! Even my mother thinks so!”

Catch her tonight at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place, where she takes the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $29.50 to $47.50 and available at www.livenation.com.
