Creep Out with Tim Burton

The Denver Public Library’s Fresh City Life events program takes a goth turn this month — just in time for Halloween — with its Being Tim Burton film series. The second installment takes place tonight at 6 p.m. with Ed Wood, Burton’s biopic of the cult filmmaker.

“The spark for this series came at the end of our Hitchcock series,” says Chris Loffelmacher, the library’s director of cultural programming. “It really blew up with great crowds and was a lot of fun, but, you know, we started with Hitchcock. I turned to Walter Chaw and asked, ‘How do we repeat this?’ And he said, ‘Easy: Burton.’” Chaw is critic and curator at FilmFreakCentral.net, and he’s a full-fledged Tim Burton freak. He calls Ed Wood “a picture that bridges the gap between cult and camp classic; the melancholic and the melodramatic; and the difference between a director of vision and a director with a vision that sucks.” He’ll lead the after-film discussion tonight and at upcoming screenings, which take place every Tuesday through November 9. Next up are Sleepy Hollow, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sweeney Todd. “Ed Wood really cemented Johnny Depp’s place as Burton’s male muse,” Loffelmacher points out. “Depp stars in four of the five films in our series [Edward Scissorhands played on October 12], and Ed Wood is really as strange and fascinating as any of their projects together.”

See the series at the Central Library, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway. Go to http://denverlibrary.org/fresh for more information.
Tuesdays, 6 p.m. Starts: Oct. 12. Continues through Nov. 9, 2010
