Happy UNbirthday
Sure, you’ve heard of the United Nations, and of course you’ve heard of Eleanor Roosevelt. Perhaps you even know about her role in developing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). But the impact this unprecedented document had on human rights worldwide, and the meaning it still holds today, can be difficult to grasp in our comfy bubble of USA freedom. Help is at hand: Scholar and actress Susan Marie Frontczak will resurrect Roosevelt in a performance called Hammering Out Human Rights: Eleanor Roosevelt at the United Nations at 2 p.m. today at the Canyon Theater in the Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Avenue.
During her forty-minute monologue, Roosevelt/Frontczak will speak in vivid detail of the grueling, at times seemingly hopeless, process of developing the UDHR, then take questions from the audience. “In times of strife, we must look to our heroes and heroines,” Frontczak says. “Their forgotten wisdom can guide us as we move forward.”
