Independence Day Scares

If you’re the type who spends the weekend covered in fake blood, parading in front of a camera, then the inaugural Mile High Horror Film Festival is your cup of goo. The two-day festival will overflow with local, national and international indie-horror flicks, everything from student films and animation to shorts — including two from Colorado, Robert Berg’s finis’ and Matt Allen’s Aces & Eights — and feature-length films, which will be judged by a panel that includes Blair Witch Project writer/director Daniel Myrick.

The horror doesn’t end when the movies do, though. “We’re also having the folks from Horrorfest host trivia, as well as after-parties and costume contests both nights,” says Timothy Schultz, the festival’s executive director. Tonight’s party is at Casselman’s, 2620 Walnut Street; tomorrow’s awards ceremony/party will be at the Lobby, 2191 Arapahoe Street.

The festival starts at 5 p.m. today and runs through tomorrow at Starz FilmCenter, in the Tivoli building on the Auraria campus; ticket prices start at $9 for individual events or $30 for a weekend pass. For details and a complete schedule, visit www.milehighhorrorfilmfestival.com.
