As PlatteForum’s Judy Anderson discusses the gallery’s upcoming show, she’s surrounded by activity. “We’re transforming the place,” she says. “We’ve got a riot of colors going up on the walls.” Featuring the work of resident artist Theresa Anderson and eight students from Denver’s P.S.1, in between, a combination of installations and paintings, is a true document of the transformative power of art and a poster child for the gallery’s aim to change the lives of underserved youth through ongoing artist mentorship programs. “I don’t want Theresa to ever leave,” she adds, and you just know this show is going to be extraordinary.

“She uses everything from sketching to doing live performance, putting them in an uncomfortable place in public,” Judy explains. “She made them pull a single bed through LoDo, with one student dressed in a pharmacy jacket that had wings attached that were made out of journal writings torn up into feathers. The whole process was supposed to be like flying, or figuring out what’s preventing you from flying or feeling like you have power.”

Over a period of about six weeks, Theresa pushed the kids to journal, sketch, paint, install and perform beyond their usual boundaries. “It’s been great — these kids have grown so much,” Judy notes. “It’s a testament to Theresa that these students have stuck it out. She’s had a few hard knocks in life herself, so she’s coming from the same place as the kids.”
