Given that its a rally for people whove been too busy to go to rallies, as Daily Show host and figurehead Jon Stewart put it, its understandable that a lot of the target audience would also be too busy to make it out to Washington, D.C., for the real thing. Hence The Rally to Restore Sanity: Denver, a local version of Stewarts somewhat serious, somewhat satirical answer to Glenn Becks Rally to Restore Honor.

This exploded way more than I expected it to, says Keira Havens, who describes herself as the silly person who put up the Facebook page, so I guess Im the organizer. After following the idea from its beginnings on Reddit.com to Stewarts announcement that hed pick up the cause, Havens decided to hold a Denver satellite rally one of several local versions around the country. Since then, shes rounded up a couple thousand confirmed attendees, a live feed of Stewarts rally and an appearance from the Flobots Jonny 5 pretty fair shakes for a spur-of-the-moment whim. In fact, Havens now says it's shaping up to be one of the top five satellite rallies in the nation.
The rally runs today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Civic Center Park. Its free, and you can stay as long as you like, but Havens asks that you leave your rabid opinions at home: We are really trying to keep this as apolitical as possible, she urges. Were just getting together to say, hey, people are yelling a lot, and we would prefer that you tone it down a little.
